'Find printer' not available

Have a gradual creeping issue on our 2003 network. Users have found they have a
limited range of printers, (Imagewriter,XMS), and are not able to select a printer
through 'Word' or any other software. In fact 'Find printer' button has stopped
appearing within the 'Print' window in Word.
Also users cannot 'Add printer' even though this has not been disallowed by group
policies.
Up until 3 weeks ago all users could select the printer they wanted no problem, but
this issue has crept to all groups.
Has all the characteristics of a virus, but Sophos sweep does not pick anything up.
Absolutely exhausted!
