Migrating 2003 as only a fileserver

We are currently running Windows NT Server as both our fileserver and our PDC. We have reached a point where we have hit HD limits and are scrapping to find space on our disk drives.

The task that has been sent down to me is to first bring up a fileserver then worry about doing the Domain Controller later. Our goal is to eventually have another server that acts only as a PDC. If we build a Windows Server 2003 box and let it act as nothing more then our file server, will it interfere with the NT Server acting as the PDC? In addition, will we be able to make this 2003 server a BDC in the future if we don't install active directory right away?

Do not install active directory on the server 2003 box and it will be any type of server you want without interfering with a domain controller. The only problem I see here, is that you will have to figure out how to make it authenticate your users to your NT box for access to the file shares. Otherwise, server 2003 will not recognize the users you have created on NT and will not allow proper access. If you run server 2003 in interim or mixed mode you can use it as a BDC emulator I believe. This link may help to explain 2003 directory services modes. http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-6345_11-5140371.html
