a couple problems new server

hi just installed 2003 on a spare computer here. i have set up active directory, file server& dns. now i have created some users in the active directory and have double clicked them and on the profile tab i have put in a path for profiles to be stored \\(server name)\profiles$\(username) which comes up with no errors on the server, however when i log on (using win 2000) it says it cannot store the profile in the path ive given and that a local profile will be used i have set permissions everyone has everything but full control and then the admins which have full control with inheritable permissions allowed. now i have also added a path to the home folder \\(server name)\home$\(username) and it comes up with a message saying: the \\(server name)\home\(username) was not created because the path was not found. This could be caused by listing non-existant intermediate folders or by not finding the server or share. The user account has been updated with the new home folder value but you must create the folder manually. i have been working with server 2000 in the past and it automatically added the folder in the correct location. what is going on? finally, i am able to login to the domain via windows 2000 but my windows xp pro machine complains that the domain cannot be found?

1. Users need full permissions to their profile folder.
2. I presume you have created the hidden shares profile$ and home$ and given users
full permissions to the shares?
3. You say you can log on with 2k - so you successfully added them to the domain
- but not XP - does that mean you've managed to add them to domain but they won't
log on?

hi thanks for the reply! that is correct, i have added both the windows 2000 and the xp machines to the domain but the xp machine wouldn't log on after a restart or anything. i have given full permissions on the profile folder and on the home folder but both computers complain of being not allowed to write to it. yes they are hidden shares.

Have you given full permissions to the folders AND to the shares?

what about trying removing the hidden ($) from the shares? (just to see if any different).

does the domain appear on the XP's logon drop down box?

If so, what message do you get trying to log on? And Is your first logon as a domain
administrator? (I find it often won't let me log on as user until first logged on
as domain administrator).

I've never had these permissions problems with 2k3 - apart from accidentally not
setting permissions somewhere (like on the folder and the share) - though I don't
use hidden shares for profile & home folders.

i will try login as administrator, i cannot remember what i tried logging in with as it was a few days ago. when you talk about the share and the folder do you mean the folder that the share is in? i am just right clicking on folders and doing sharing and security and then doing the permissions.

Yes - you know there are separate permissions to the folder and to the share. They
need to be full for both.

I'd try removing it from domain and then rejoining.

Does your XP box get the DNS address of the server via DHCP or something? If your XP box is getting a DNS address of anything other than the server you will not be able to login. But presumably, you would not have been able to join the network either.

\\(server name)\profiles$\(username)

Ok, this is your first problem: profile$
The "$" denotes an administrative share which does not allow regular users to access the shares. They would have to be members of the administrators group to be able to acces, and/or, write to the shares. Kill those folders, recreate them without the $. This is how it should look:
\\server\shared folder\user.

The $ denotes a hidden share. Not an administrative share. Administrative shares are hidden, thus they have a $ after them. Administrative shares are C$, IPC$, etc.. The user can create any number of hidden shares that they want by simply appending a $, and any user can access it with the proper permissions.
