for the most part works fine but opening forms tends to be slow - is there any procedure to improve performance in this area - as well 1 program works fine while others tend to be slower - and same ideolgy in design - no dll's are used, no addins - base Access2000

Most likely depends on how well each "program" was written. Access can be programmed 
in multiple ways to accomplish the same result, but with considerable variation in 
performance. Less skilled personnel will use the methods that are slower. Really 
not an OS issue.

There are certainly lots of factors that can effect performance. Speed of the PC and amout of RAM. Network performance. Server load/performance. Size of the data. Method of database connectivity. Indexing.
