File name changing in explorer

On Server 2003 occasionally some files will rename themselves, and I am not sure
what is going on.
Ex:
User: Admin group
Copied an excel file to the server.
File name ForMort_Tarrant_200904upd.xls in Excel 2003 format.
In explorer it is shown as _FZimArch
with no extension, while my settings are set to show extensions of known and unknown
file types.
Right-click -> File properties shows the original file name.
Refreshing/Restarting the browser does not make a difference.
I tried searching this forum and google for something about this, but without any
luck.
Would be happy to have any info on what causes this.
Thanks!

I've just seen something similar.
A file named "ReImportThomsonPriceHistory.pl" shows as "5/5/2009 10:05AM" in the
Name column when the column is wide enough to show the full correct name. If the
column is made narrower, it shows a truncated version of the correct name followed
by "..." as usual.
Right clicking and choosing Properties shows the correct name.
Hitting F2 to rename, clearing the automatic highlight and re-highlighting the name
shows the correct name.
Very odd!
There are no strange characters hidden in the file name.
I can create a new file in a different folder and the same thing happens.
While typing the new name, it displays correctly until I type the final 'l'. It then
changes to the date/time shown above. If I type another character it switches back
to showing the correct name.
Capitalisation seems to matter - changing the initial upper case letter to lower
case stops this happening.
Again this is on Win Server 2003.
Creating a file with the same name on XP does not show this behaviour.
All disks have NTFS file systems.

A very interesting problem.
The first thing I would do is drop to a command prompt. Use the 'DIR' command in
that folder and see if the filename is listed correctly with the 'DIR' command.
Numerous times I have seen windows explorer display filenames incorrectly, while
the 'DIR' command shows them correctly. Your problem sounds like it may be different,
but in my experience, Windows Explorer is unusually buggy for it being around for
so long.
If the problem is only present in explorer, but you are still able to find the files
and share them correctly then it may just be an explorer issue.

I agree - it does look like a strange Explorer display bug.
The DIR command shows the file name correctly as does the Properties dialog in Explorer.
The Date/Time that Explorer displays in place of the file name does not seem to be
related to the file in any way.

Wasn't quite the same issue as Bob's for me. The names that were used weren't replaced
by other file information like creation/modification or truncated for long file names.
I did still have trouble accessing the files by either their original or new file
names. In each case thus far I have just ended up deleting them, and restoring them
from backup or source computer.
I believe the cause is related to excessive read/write requests and/or faults. Read/Write
queue on the server is always high, even running raid5. The filename that sometimes
replaces the actual filename seems to be derived from that user's account name. (me
= _FZim)
In command prompt, sometimes the file name was the original, others it was the new,
and other times it was an entertaining display of random numbers, characters, and
symbols.

I'm not sure if this was covered, but have you tried running something as simple
as a chkdsk command to verify the file system integrity?
