install.log and/or shell manager

In trying to remove some extraneous programs (like stupid games, unused add-ons)
I keep getting the error msg "installation.log file not found" or "install.log not
found". Today I also got "shell manager could not be found". How can I remove these
programs?
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
