Missing hard drive space

Little by little (or lot by lot) my hard drive space is disappearing- I lost 3 gigs today, and 3 gigs last week- I left the computer on, and noticed this change, but I can't trace back what's downloaded, if that's the culprit... I've done a disk cleanup, but no change, nor virus scan/spyware issues. Does windows 7 do a shadow file thing? If so, how to stop such huge files being created? I probably have like 50 gigs wasted, at this point, and I'd like to track it, at least. Thanks.
