Certainly try and bypass Vista if you can. Waiting isn't such a bad option - XP is stable, pretty secure, and my guess is that there's at least 5 years useful life left, by which I mean it will be supported, compatible peripherals will be available, software will be updated etc etc. All this because there are so many XP users out there.
