I don't know about installing to a USB drive, but I have installed both Win 7 Beta
and Win 7 RC to an eSATA drive. I normally boot Win XP SP3 from one or the other
of two internal SATA drives.
I use the eSATA drive primarily as a backup device; also as a third bootable system
drive. The eSATA drive stays unplugged till I want to use it.
Win 7 installs its own boot manager on the SATA drives. When booting with / without
the eSATA drive plugged in, the boot manager gives a choice of booting Windows 7
or an older version of Windows. If I choose Win 7, it boots from the eSATA drive;
if I choose an older version of Windows, then the boot screen changes and I get the
normal Win XP boot choices.
