Win32 applications compatibility

In conversations via email with MS Support, they are basically saying that "legacy" applications probably won't work with Win7. This would mean a huge outlay of cash just to update to recent applications in order for Win7 to be of any use...not counting the cost of the Win7 upgrade itself. Has anyone used Win7 and what experiences do you have using older existing windows applications. What I use daily at work is Photoshop 7, Illustrator 7 and a number of other windows applications. I really am satisfied remaining on Win2k Because it is stable and everything runs ok. As a web developer, however, I would like to be able to view sites in the newer browsers many of which won't run on Win2k. That is the only reason I have even considered an "upgrade". If it means my necessary applications won't run then it is a useless upgrade for me. Any feedback on general use of Win32 applications is welcome. With thousands of apps and utilities on the web I hate to think that Microsoft would release an OS that would, in effect, render them all useless. It would amount to an attack against individual software vendors and open source coders.
