Alternatively,
 he can start the upgrade process but insert the previous version disc when it asks 
for proof  of previous version.

  That's the way I've done  it for a truly install clean install.  
     I've done this for the last 11 yrs from   Win 98->Me -> XP   it takes a little 
guesswork in getting it set up right  but it saves  a lot of  problems in the long 
run.
