I built a new amd phenom machine running windows 7. It uses wireless usb keyboard
mouse, another usb mouse, and a usb ipod. However, I think it killed 3 flash drives.
1. I plugged in a brand new flash drive and got a "device malfunction / not recognized"
error. I tried it on 2 windows xp machines and got the same error
2. usb sd card reader I use for camera. same error, have yet to try on another machine.
Worked fine on previous systems. I will try the sd card in the camera tonight.
3. kingston flash drive that i have been using for years. Took files from 2 win xp
machines yesterday, plugged into new machine only to get the same error. Now the
same error occurs other win xp machines as well as an open suse machine. open suse
doesn't even acknowledge I plugged in a usb device. This device is apparently inoperable,
having been plugged into the new computer once for a few minutes.
What the heck is this? If the machine is at fault, why doesn't it affect the ipod
(another usb mass storage device) Some goofball motherboard issue frying the flash
drives? Doesn't quite add up. There are literally billions of threads on malfunctioning
usb sticks, which makes this a huge pain in the butt to troubleshoot.
Are their any utilities that can try to connect to the device to figure anything
out?
Could this be malware related? Seems unlikely, but??
