Outlook is prone to this - its probably not W7 or the interaction with W7 so I'd
post at woody's Lounge - www.wopr.com
Having said that there are two causes I know of:
1. outlook.pst is corrupt. Search for this file and rename it. When it starts Outlook
will create a new one. you might be able to recover mail in the old .pst file if
you open it from Outlook - but not always.
2. Sometimes Outlook gets knotted up trying to do its "on open" send and receive
when the Internet connection is not quite ready. Curiously this doesn't happen if
the connection is absent, when Outlook is intelligent enough not to try. You might
try opening Outlook with your connection disabled which will tell you if that's the
cause. A reinstall is the only cure I know - if you have mails you want to save,
rename your outlook.pst file first and you'll be able to open it from the new Outlook.
Of course 2 years (2007 -> 2009) is far too soon to get a stable product - that's
why I'm sticking to Outlook 2003 for now :-)

. . . remembered something else !
Hold down the CTRL key whilst starting Outlook, and agree to start in its Safe Mode.
If it starts, compact the database and this may sort out the issue.

I understand you cannot find the outlook.pst file. Please continue this discussion
in the forum rather than by email :-)
How are you trying to find it ? It should be somewhere like:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst
You may have to look in hidden files as somewhere in its path there's a hidden folder.
If it really doesn't exist then something's seriously wrong with your Outlook
installation (it creates one at startup if its missing) and yo umay have to uninstall/reinstall
it.
Did you try Outlook's Safe Mode ?

I did try safe mode and it was terrible. I could not do anything except read the
messages. I still cannot find the named file and in my directories they are structured
as yours are listed.... local/microsoft/outlook in here there are only 4 listings
they are archive - extend.dat - outlook - outlook.sharing.xml.obi.. I reinstalled
win 7 over the factory win 7 and the outlook and any other issues are or seem to
be resolved but I am still curious where this file you named is hiding just in case
I ever did to access it to resolve any future issues.....

Location of outlook.pst

Ray,
You weren't meant to work in Outlook's Safe Mode, just to open it once
and close it again - that process often fixes the issue you were having !!
Anyway, the location of your outlook.pst file is easy to find:
Open Outlook
Tools
Options
Mail setup tab
Data files button
. . . and there it is. You'll have to fiddle around in the tiny window to see the
full path.
Or, possibly easier to see:
Right click on Personal Folders in the LH navigation pane and select Properties for
"Personal folders"
Advanced button . . . and there is the full path to your outlook.pst file
Do let me know where you found it !
Its a useful file (eg its the file to backup to save all your Outlook contents and
settings), you may care to read these references:

You don't need to find your .pst file. Just export it.
Click File > Import and Export > Export to a file > Personal file folder (.pst).
