Install problem: setup.exe won't run

I have a Vista SP1 Acer laptop which had no issues after I ran the Windows Vista
Upgrade Advisor. I received my Windows 7 DVD set (32 bit & 64 bit) last week. I inserted
the 32 bit DVD in my drive. I get an Autorun pop-up asking me to confirm I want to
run setup.exe, and I clicked on it to run it. I then got the UAC pop-up asking me
if it's okay to run, and I say Yes.

I see some blinking lights on the DVD drive for maybe one minute, and nothing else
happens during that time or after that time.

I look at Task Manager and see setup.exe there but always at 0% CPU.

That's it. It just dies and nothing happens.

I tried START/RUN/d:\setup.exe and the exact same thing happens.

I click on COMPUTER then the D drive and do indeed see the contents of the DVD, including
setup.exe. I click on it and nothing happens.

Vista tells me that I have a 32 bit OS when I look at System properties. I am using
the 32 bit DVD from Microsoft.

Any ideas, please?

Frustrated in VT,

Tom

What happens when you boot from the DVD?

I don't know. I haven't tried it. I did not know it was a bootable copy. If I do
will I be forced to do a clean install? I'm trying to do an upgrade. I guess I will
have to change the boot sequence in the BIOS too, since I have had the DVD in its
drive when I have rebooted.

Thanks for your reply,

Tom

Surprised to say - NOTHING! It does not act like it's bootable, but then I would
expect some kind of message? I'm afraid I couldn't wait any longer and shut the machine
off.

Hey Adam, I just wanted to thank you for replying to my plight. I can only figure
that I got a bad DVD. I tried it on a different machine and it wouldn't work there
either.

Amazon is sending me a replacement.

Thanks again,

Tom

Cool, lets hope this one is a better disk.

If you only have one hard drive and only one partition on it, I guess you wouldn't
be able to install it by clicking on setup.exe. I could be wrong but my guess is
you would have to boot the computer from the DVD.
