Three Program Files folders.

I upgraded the XP partition in my laptop to Windows 7 x32 from the Microsoft DVD
and was so impressed with the result that I formatted the Vista partition on the
same machine and installed x64 from the same DVD. Again I was impressed with the
lack of problems so I decided to 'go for broke' and change my Fujitsu Siemens laptop
to 7. Fujitsu advised that the model was not 7 compatible so I bought a new Toshiba
this week with 7 x64 pre-installed. I have had loads of problems with this machine
too numerous to detail, but the latest discovery is a lulu. I have three Program
Files folders. 1. Program Files; 2. Program Files (x86) and 3. Program Files (x86)
(x86). I presume PF (x86) contains the programs running in Compatibility Mode but
the (x86) (x86) version looks like a bug or some accidental screw-up(?) resulting
from my repeated efforts to install supporting software (supposedly 7 x64 ready)
for my Lexmark X6690 wireless All-in-One. This software has been installed, but on
launching produces an error "Microsoft .NET Framework version 2 is required to continue."
>NET Framework 2 is, of course, installed by the operating system and I have checked
that it is there. This error seems to be not uncommon and I encountered it on my
PC when trying to install the TV tuner. My problem is to know what to do with this
extra Program Files folder. Is it legitimate or an error and, if the latter, how
do I safely remove it and any related Registry entries?

I do not know what to do about the problem, but I can tell you that it may be an error as I only have two as you suspected is normal.

I found that the extra 'Program File (x86) (x86)' folder contained only two Lexmark
Files so I concluded it had been created during my repeated and unsuccessful attempts
to install the driver and supporting software for my Lexmark All-in-One. I deleted
it without any apparent ill-effects. Today I found the answer to the software installation
problem. I had downloaded the wrong driver file from the Lexmark website. Simple
really (it always is in retrospect!), and pretty obvious if I had known what I now
know about Windows 7 and x64, but I am disappointed that Lexmark Support's only advice
in several exchanges was to install .NET Framework version 2.
