The most common causes of windows hanging on shutdown are: 1. a corrupt or missing "Exit windows" sound file. Go to control panel sounds and disable the exit windows sound if enabled and see if that cures the problem. 2. A networked/shared drive that is not "closing" ( responding to an "end task" broadcast )during shutdown. Sometimes merely hitting enter will continue the shutdown for this problem.
