For what it's worth.... This may not be related, but the first time I reinstalled windows 95 from a cd, it froze, but later in the install when it was prompting to detect hardware. I had the sound card and modem removed as suggested. Could not get it to finish. Reformatted, installed the sound card and modem, and the install went fine.
