Windows, all versions, is complex, huge, and contains a goodly share of bad code.
You always take a chance that an upgrade will fail disastrously, and should
always have backed up anything you can't afford to lose.
That said, one of the best reasons for multiple logical disk volumes (partitions)
on a hard drive is to protect the data from an OS upgrade gone wild. That's only
one reason. Simplified backup requirements is an even better reason.
