Gray screen and inaccessible desktop (Win95)

The screen of my computer with Windows 95 appears gray/dark and inaccessible ever since I fiddled with the default background (blue slate color) and the default screen saver. Here is what happened: I changed the default background to one of the wallpaper graphics in the list (it's a dark library), then I restarted the computer (because a pop up window appeared saying I should restart the computer). Then I changed the default screen saver to one in the list (haunted house), and then I restarted the computer (again, following the prompt). A few days later, I changed the background and the screen saver back to the default settings, simultaneously (i.e. without restarting the computer after each change). And darkness came upon the screen. The only thing that I can access is DOS screen, only because I can 'grope in the dark' by directing the mouse toward the whereabouts of the start menu on the task bar at the bottom of the screen and by using the arrow button from the keyboard to access the 'restart with DOS' command. Any suggestions what I should do to get the screen back?
