Monitor enters standby mode when starting Windows 95

I am upgrading a computer with Windows 95 & wish to backup data & list installed
applications. However on startup, although as far as the Windows 95 splash screen
everything appears normal at that point, the monitor goes into standby. Without
a display I cannot say for sure but the hard disk continues to work & presumably
the start up is completed to the Desktop.
I can start the system & get into Safe Mode where the display is quite adequate for
my immediate needs. (In Safe Mode Device Manager has no indications of conflicts
or other problems.) However what do I need to do to get a display in Normal Mode?
