Hi Steve:
This is the second Windows Sockets file that's
turned up missing/corrupted on your computer (but
that's OK -- I don't charge by "the file") -- I'm
just wondering if something else isn't going
wrong here beyond the occasional simple corrupted
file which needs replacing (and that CAN happen).
As Carol noted, these two files are both part of
the WinSock2 upgrade package which came out in
1999. Now, original Win95 should run perfectly
well WITHOUT this upgrade, if you're using all
circa 1995 programs. However, if you connect to
the Internet, the WinSock2 upgrade contains some
good security features.
Assuming your computer DID work OK at one time
before these messages started appearing, let's
consider some things that may be causing these
missing file messages:
1) Have you installed any new hardware or software
recently?
2) Have you UNinstalled any old hardware or
software recently?
3) Have you TRIED to install a program that lists
as its requirements "Win98 or later"?
4) Have you been trying to reclaim some needed
hard drive space by DELETING unnecessary files?
5) Have any grandchildren been in to visit lately
who have played games on your computer?
