Hi Woolly:

Well -- (big hesitation here) -- I wonder if the
PCMCIA CDROM was designed for Wind95-B (or later)
-- I hesitate to encourage you to reformat and
reinstall an otherwise well-working Win95-A. 
Reinstalling on a clean (reformatted) drive means
you have to reinstall all your other drivers and
applications -- which means rounding up all THOSE
original installation disks.  (Although I do this
all the time on my "test" computer, I know exactly
where all the needed components are.)

I think if everything else is working OK, I would
just buy a free-standing CD player ("Boom Box")
for my little listener, and not press my luck with
the Win95A computer.
