Hi Caroline:
OK -- Windows is broken -- let's take a look at
what is there and isn't there from the OUTSIDE.
If you don't already have a BOOTDISK (a floppy
disk with DOS on it), go here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
and download the "Windows 95 Version B" file to
the desktop of a working computer. A file called
BOOT95B.EXE will appear on the desktop.
Double-click on it, and follow the directions. It
will have you put a BLANK floppy disk in the
floppy drive of the "good" computer, and it will
create a bootable floppy disk with DOS and several
useful files. When it finishes,
Put the new floppy BOOTDISK in the broken computer
while the power is OFF, then turn the power ON
with the bootdisk already in place.
You'll see some messages on the screen. If you
have a CDROM drive, you should see a message that
says something about a BANANA. When it stops, you
should see:
A:\>_
Now, go back to my last message about how to run
SCANDISK, and follow the directions starting with
"Type SCANDISK C:"
Post back here and let us know how it goes, then
we'll go from there. If the Scandisk runs
successfully, and the hard drive doesn't seem to
have major physical problems, we can explore it
more using DOS running from your new BOOTDISK,
which you will keep handy for ever and ever.
