If you're using Windows Workgroups and File and Printer Sharing, WinXP will sometimes spontaneously 'drop' older OS machines from the Workgroup - even after a format/OS reinstall, the older pc can be blocked from accessing the printer. You should investigate either a) getting a dedicated print server /nic for your printer, or b) using Print Services for Unix (a better solution for your setup; Google for instructions on how to set it up in Windows).
