Command Interpreter issues.

Okay... There's quite a bit to this, but I'll try to keep it as brief as I can. I
inherited a laptop from my dad's company. It had a power-up password that no one
knew, so they were keen to get rid of it.
So, I got rid of the password by taking out that little battery (I put it back afterwards).
Then I formatted it and lost interest in it for a while.
Anyway, recently I found my old Windows 95 discs, and thought I'd get the thing working
again. Upon turning it on, it seemed I had some sort of ghost of windows 95 on there.
I would get the loading splash-screen, then get put into the command prompt.
Curious to see what was there, I typed "DIR /P", which only showed up "COMMAND.COM".
Thinking it was nothing, I then typed "erase *.*" to format the whole thing and start
over. However, the same thing happened, with the only change being that when it sent
me to the command prompt I get a screen saying:
Starting Windows 95...
Type the name of the Command Interpreter (e.g., c:\windows\COMMAND.COM)
C:\>
I've tried using the boot disc I have, and downloaded boot discs, but it stays stuck
in C:\>, and I can't get it to A:\>, and when I try typing a:\COMMAND.COM for the
location, I just get the "Type the name of the..." message again.
Can anyone help? I just want to get the thing blank so I can start it from scratch
again, if that makes it any easier.
