Hi Chris:

That's probably the smart way to do it.  I recall
back the the DOS days, it wasn't smart to make
your PATH statement too long (i.e., fill it with
lots of directories that you only visited
occasionally).

A lengthy PATH consumed "environment" space, and
the OS had to search through all the locations
specified every time a program was started.

A don't know if those limitations extended into
the Windows 95+ era.  But you're surely safer
keeping your start-up PATH short, and then
"extending" it on an ad hoc basis when needed for
certain occasional activities.
