Hi, Jan. It appears that you have 95a, the 'a' part is not worth using as it won't
do FAT32 file system which would have allowed you to have larger partitions than
2 gig. 95b would do FAT32 and most users have left 95a long ago, I really hate to
see you trade Win2k for a 95b upgrade CD, did you ask him if he'll trade for something
of real value like a second hard drive? Call and ASK as 95 CDs have no real value,
I'm thinking you could buy 95b 'full' installation CD on ebay for $10 plus shipping
IF one is ever put up for sale there.
Please answer all of the questions given, not just the ones you know off hand, Chris
will appreciate this too. And you are welcome if I forget to say that later.
186 mb free space is marginal at best, you DO need more in the way of hard
drive(s). Especially since you seem to be the type of user that downloads just about
everything - you need a lot more space than you currently have and the best way to
get it is using FAT32 file system on a larger hard drive.
Win95 has the worst bootdisks ever, they often don't have on them the file himem.sys
which 95 requires to be loaded in the config.sys file in order to run the Windows
Installation setup.exe file so one can even install Windows. They also typically
don't have a decent CDROM driver so one can't see or use the CD for Windows installation/reinstallation.
See this thread
for both issues. I recommend the 95 bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com as it's CDROM driver is more accepting
of various CDROM drives than most others. It has a more likely chance of working
for you, but you should always test boot with your bootdisk to see if your CD is
available before you format to reinstall Windows. You'll also need the ProductId
or 'Key' number for the CD, before you do the format.
I still need the total capacity of your hard drive, or hard drives if you have more
than one - you didn't say, this is the second time I'm asking, please answer even
with 'I don't know' if you can't find out.
As Chris implied, don't get spastic or hurried when posting, take your time - the
computer is there to serve you not the other way around, and we'll wait too. The
more information you can give us (that we can understand), the better and faster
we can help you get where you want to be - I don't understand what you mean or want
sometimes... You hang in there and we'll get you going eventually.
