completely unresponsive on boot attempt

I recently received a TI Extensa Windows 95 laptop. It worked fine at first pretty
much, but then something happened and it became unusable. When I tried to boot it
did nothing, except maybe try to access the CD-ROM. There was no display, and it
wouldn't even use a Win95 emergency floppy. I used the function key to switch between
CRT and LCD to try to get the display on, but that didn't work. Then today (3 days
later) I tried it one additional time before posting this, and suddenly it boots
fine again. Does anyone know what might be going on to cause this intermittent "dead
mode" phenomenon?

Here is a brief breakdown of what happened previously to cause the "dead mode" condition:
I hooked up a CRT that there may be something wrong with, to see if it works. I
forgot there was a non-bootable floppy in the drive when booting up for this purpose,
so it didn't boot. In fact this was the first time it went into "dead mode." I
cut power, disconnected the monitor, removed the floppy, and tried booting again.
It worked fine as if nothing had happened. Then I tried booting with only the non-bootable
floppy in the drive again to see if that's what caused the strange behavior, and
it wouldn't boot, but gave the message that it was not a bootable floppy. I warm
booted after removing the floppy again and it seemed to be working but then got an
error about not having enough RAM to start Windows, and shut itself down. I tried
booting again, and it insisted on starting in Safe mode. Then after that whenever
I tried to boot it was totally unresponsive, until just now. Any ideas?
