read 5.25 floppy disks

I know this is a W95 forum but I have a serious need to answer a W3.1 issue. I was
given a package of 5.25 floppy disks with important records that need to be accessed.
I was able to locate an old computer with a 5.25 inch drive but I can't get it to
read the disks. I get as far as properties and can see the files on the disk but
when I try to open them I get a message that there is "no common point" for the file.
My question is: exactly how do I go about accessing and displying the info on the
disks? Everything I know about W3.1 is thru trial and error. Thanx
