Hi carthinain:
OPTION 1:
If you want your Win95 back, try using a floppy BOOTDISK to
get into DOS. Then, RENAME the folder (directory) where you
put all the Windows files. Call it C:\WINDOWS
Now, reboot the computer without the floppy. If you didn't
tamper with anything except the C:\WINDOWS folder, Windows
should come back.
Once you get your Win95 back, you can upgrade it to Win98
with a Win98 FULL INSTALL disk, if you follow the directions
here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win95/r1059975805
OPTION 2:
If you don't need to keep anything on the old Win95
computer, use a floppy bootdisk with CDROM support. It will
contain FORMAT.COM which will let you wipe everything, and
install Win98 from your Win98 FULL installation disk.
OPTION 3:
If "Option #1" didn't work, and you still have stuff on the
old Win95 box that you need to save, I would use a parallel
port ZIP drive (about $10 on eBay). It will boot from DOS
on a floppy bootdisk, with the right DOS drivers (still
available [believe it or not, bless 'em] on the Iomega
website).
Then you can use DOS to copy the data files from the old
Win95 box to ZIP disk(s) to move them to another (working)
computer. Note that the DOS "COPY" command will NOT
preserve any long files names. However . . .
If you use one of several LFN emulators, you CAN copy the files
with their long file names intact. More information is
here:
http://sta.c64.org/lfnemu.html
My favorite is "Odi's LFN Tools."
Good luck.
