closing a file after a disk error

I was updating a file in an application and when I saved it I received a disk error.
The screen then went blank. I had to turn off the computer to start working again.
When I tried to open that file in the application I could not. I believe because
of the way the computer was restarted the file was not properly closed. Is there
any way to solve this problem
