Thanks for the help. However, the problem is more serious than I realized. When I run scandisk, after a few minutes the disk drive just whirs and nothing else happens even if I let it sit for a half hour. It won't let me cancel scandisk. The only way I can get out is to shut down the computer I guess the disk drive is shot. Since it's an old laptop I'm going to scap it. Bob
