Opening file at midnight hangs-up computer

Task:
An application executes a "For" loop (few iterations). All ach iteration does is
opens and closes a text file.
If the midnight occures somewhere in the middle of this loop then the first attempt
to open the text file after midnight hangs-up the computer !!!
Any ideas what may be causing this hang-up ??
