IE & Firefox Crash

Dusted off an old Dell laptop with Win95 a couple of weeks ago. Put in a patch or
two, tried to update IE to IE5, etc. Somehow, I broke something. Tried to go back
to IE4. No doubt a mistake.
Now, I get an error when opening IE4: the infamous "This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down." Clicking on Details tells me "IEXPLORE
caused an exception 6d007fH in module KERNEL32.dll at 0137:bff9a3c0."
I then installed Firefox. Similar type of crash: "FIREFOX caused an invalid page
fault in module KERNEL32.dll at 0137:bff7aaca."
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I need to do? Thanks.
