So I decided to finally try to put a wheel mouse on my IBM PS/1, 15 years young and still working well. I got a corded IBM USB mouse made about four years ago from a family member who had never used it (he got a Belkin wireless instead). I went out and got one of those USB to PS/2 adaptors and plugged it in. Unfortunately, the computer won't recognize that I have any mouse installed when I use it. I didn't get any drivers with the adaptor and couldn't get it to work even though I kept selecting different mouse types from the mouse control panel (I had to do all this using just the keyboard...thankfully I got a replacement keyboard with Win95 keys a long time ago for it). After some unsuccessful attempts, I just gave up and put the old mouse back on it. Is there something I'm missing in this process or do these adaptors just not work on either Win95 or some older machines?
