MS Imager will not open .gif, .jpeg and .bmp images

Recently,for whatever reason, my computer defaulted to MS Imager as the Viewer and
all my .bmp, .jpeg and .gif image files have been re-tagged with MS Imager icons,
but the MS Imager will not open them. Any new image files saved under the above extentions
will also be automatically saved with the MS Imager icon, but cannot be opened by
MS Imager.
Whenever I want to open an image file with the Internet Explorer, the MS Imager comes
on and a note " unknown format extention" appears.
My computer has Windows 95, MS Office 97, IE 5.5 and AOL 5.0 service.
How can I reset my computer to the original settings to open these files with the
Internet Explorer?
