Won't recognize PS/2 Serial Mouse

I've just received a system with win95 already installed. When I boot I get an error
saying PS/2 Serial Mouse not installed. Shut down and install. I've navigated with
the key board (no mean feat) to the System...Device...Mouse and removed the mouse
altoghether. Re-boot then use the Hardware installer to let Mr. Gate's thingy do
its stuff. When the system re-starts from here it still does not recognize the mouse
(and it won't work) however, when I examine the System...Device...Mouse it shows
it has installed drivers (vmouse.vxd and mouse.drv).
Short of switching port cable can anyone PLEASE offer any suggestions.
With thanks, Bill
