Question about 'Customize the Tray'

I have a question about Customize the Tray:

I guess this is NOT a recommended way to get rid of (just) the icons in the Tray? 1. Ctrl+Alt+Del, select "Explorer", (not I.E. or O.E.) click "Close Activity" (in Eng.?). 2. The logout screen appears, press Esc or "No" to abort. 3. After the usual delay, the message "Program is not responding" (Eng.?) is shown. 4. Click "Close Activity" (Eng.?). A few moments later the screen is refreshed and all the icons in the Tray disappears. All the programs are still running though, including those with any open windows. This has been testd with no ill effects in Win95, I don't remember if I tested it on Win98. Supposedly, what is happening is that the registry is being reloaded. I don't know. Anyone?
