1. FIRST, STOP IT RUNNING SO YOU CAN GET DIRTY WITH IT
CTRL-ALT-DEL and stop MSBB running from your tasks (programs that are running that
you can't see running on the toolbar or in the system tray)
2. NEXT, DELETE THE PROGRAM ITSELF
Search your hard drives for "msbb.exe" and delete all copies of it. I found copies
in "\windows\system" and "\windows\system\fleok". The fleok sub-directory was empty
other than holding msbb.exe so I assume it's specifically meant to hold msbb.exe
but I'm not sure so I kept the empty directory after deleting the executable. Next,
look in your Program Files directory. If you see a folder called "n-case" or "180
solutions", delete them. Search your Windows directory for files that start with
"fiz". In my case I saw "FIZ1", "FIZ2", "FIZ3", "FIZ4", and "FIZ5". Delete all of
these. These are files msbb.exe creates that describe URLs you're visiting in your
web travels. msbb's goal seems to be to upload these files to somewhere on the net
to let somebody know your web travels (ie. common spyware tactics). In my case, each
of these files were created over the course of ten days or so.
3. MAKE SURE IT'S ACTUALLY DELETED
Empty your recycle bin.
4. NOW STOP WINDOWS FROM TRYING TO LOAD IT WHENEVER IT FIRST BOOTS UP
Run "regedit" (it's in your windows directory) and that'll open up your registry.
Do a search for a couple of things. Specifically "solutions" and "n-case" - look
for instances of something called "180 solutions" or "n-case". You want to delete
any folders called either of those things. I'm not entirely sure what N-Case or 180
Solutions is, other than the fact that 180 Solutions is some kind of internet related
company. Regardless, it's all stuff related to msbb.exe in some way. Next, search
for "msbb". You're specifically looking for it in a folder that's probably called
"Run". Don't delete the folder, just delete the key inside that folder that mentions
"msbb.exe". These are things that are run when Windows first starts up without you
knowing about it.
5. DONE, NOW KEEP YOURSELF PROTECTED
Put up a software firewall on your computer like ZoneAlarm (or Sygate Personal Firewall
if you want something a little nicer with more features and configurability). This
will let you know if it's trying to come back and phone home again. I have no idea
where this program comes from. I think I caught it off a web page one day while I
had my Norton Anti-Virus temporarily disabled. There's lots of people out there saying
this is impossible to delete. Not sure what they're talking about. I had it deleted
and disabled within a few minutes without any problems.
