The answer is "yes," but you've got to play "Let's fool M$."
If you use the WIN98 full version, it will balk when it sees your existing WIN95.
If you "hide" a file called "WIN.COM," the full version won't know you have WIN95,
and it can be installed OVER your existing WIN95 without losing your existing data
and programs.
I have the smoothest installation when I put all the installation files on the hard
drive, so the installation wizard doesn't have to keep "finding" the CD-ROM drive.
Make a folder on your hard drive called C:\WIN98. Copy into this folder all the
files from the Installation CD that are in the folder X:\WIN98 (where "X" is the
drive letter of your CD-ROM). There will be a bunch of files with names like "WIN98_28.CAB".
There should also be one called SETUP.EXE.
Remove your CD. Have your new
WIN98 PRODUCT ID KEY ready.
Now shutdown your Windows 95 with the RESTART IN MS-DOS MODE option. Navigate to
the C:\WINDOWS directory. RENAME the WIN.COM file to WIN.OLD.
I would also suggest hiding (renaming) any existing C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and C:\CONFIG.SYS
files which you might have. If you've got time, run SCANDISK right from the DOS
prompt and let it do a full-surface scan which will mark any bad sectors so they
won't get used again.
Now navigate to the C:\WIN98 directory, and start the Windows 98 installation by
typing SETUP (enter) at the DOS prompt.
During the installation, you will get a screen that asks where you want to put the
new Windows files, and it suggests the folder "C:\WINDOWS.000". Don't let it put
the stuff there. Edit the entry to read "C:\WINDOWS".
If you're going to need help with any of the DOS command syntax, post back here before
you start. We'll give you a quick DOS lesson.
Good luck.
