You have two options. 1st is to find and install a copy of Tweakui, which has many features including an Icon repair tool. It is freeware and can be found with a search engine. 2nd, Find and delete the file called ShelllconCache. Your pc will then automatically rebuild the Icons when you reboot.

You might have MS Office Shortcut bar running , this has a setting in the preferences. Can't remember were but its called something like Fill Pattern or Fill Color, anyway uncheck this option or just take the MS Office Shortcut bar out of the startup group, to see if this eliminates the problem. If not then try pressing F5 to refresh the Desktop, might be a Video refresh issue, due to one of your system agents locked up , occupying and not releasing a particular system resource. If you have win98, got to start and type msconfig, then goto startup tab and uncheck all startup items, save and reboot . * Good luck

Creating a new user account will work and then transferring all the new documents from the old account to the new one will do what the previous account use to do.
