Question about 'What to do about a Page-fault, Illegal operation, or Fatal exception Error'

I have a question about What to do about a Page-fault, Illegal operation, or Fatal exception Error:

Hello, I recently installed a new RAM card in a AMD K6-233 system it was a Kingston 64Meg card. This upgraded my system to 96 Megs. In addition I installed a new 56K modem. The RAM seems to be fine according to my system info., but when I try to connect to the internet via my local provider, I keep getting this message. "A fatal exception 0E has occured at 0028:C10185FF in VXD Win95AC" Can anyone tell me what this means and how I might solve this problem. My device manager tells me that the new modem is working properly, but I can't get on-line from my home computer.

Stewart,

The key here is the "VXD..." part. That indicates a device driver, specifically your
video card driver. Access your display settings from your desktop by right-clicking
on any empty area and select "Properties" from the drop-down menu. Next, go to the
"Settings" tab and click on "Advanced Properties" and then on "Adapter".

Check your adapter type to make sure you have the proper adapter displayed and not
the generic Windows graphics driver. If you do have the proper adapter and drivers,
then click on the "Performance" tab. In the Graphics section on this sheet, note
the position of the "Hardware Acceleration" tab and back it off (to the left) one
notch to see if that helps. Reboot and try again.

Have you changed your dial up configuration to your new modem? Maybe it's still looking for the old one.

Make sure you properly uninstalled your old modem driver too. Some older modem drivers can cause problems for new modems if left on the system.

W95 can only use a max of 64mb of RAM. Amounts over 64 mb will often cause problems.

Paul, just curious if you got my e-mail about W95 and virtual memory manager and himem /eisa ?? There are conflicts with W95/some machines with more than 64mb of RAM that will reduce rather than enhance performance.

Point taken. :-)

Well, I suppose it is possible, especially if the motherboard chipset cannot cache
more than 64mb.

I've also heard that Win98 cannot handle more than 128mb. Not sure about how true
that is or not.. (heard it from some "techs" at Best Buy of all places, but have
heard it elsewhere too).

Now I'm going to have to do some digging. It is my "assumption" ( bad word ) that as long as vmm32 is installed that 95/98 can handle up to 2gb ( yep gigs ) of RAM. How you would install it is a mystery though. LOL

I have had the exact same problem after installing a new 56k US Robotics modem. I am guessing the person above who spoke of the old modem's drivers might be on the right track...but I don't know how to be sure they have been removed correctly. Any ideas? Toby
