Question about 'Fit more on floppy disks with the DMF Format'

51 year old student needs help with assignment!
Assignment requires:
Definition of DMF?
Was it developed to prevent users making illegal copies?
How does the Microsoft version work?
Does it create more segments per track, or bigger segments?
What is the difference between the various flavours, i.e. 1.68MB, 1.70MB?

I am interested in being able to format a floppy disk to be able to not only have
1.44mb but 1.70mb; I once took a DOS class & my teacher at the time said he could
do this & would show us later on, but after all of the stuff I was deeply into and
understanding, I never did remember until it was too late to ask him about that formatting
a floppy disk to hold the capacity of 1.70mb instead of 1.44mb; He told about playing
a trick sometimes, that he would have information on a disk holding 1.70mb and said;
Download this! He seemed to laugh about how his friend couldn't do it, but he confest
to telling him the secret. He was very willing to show us all, and what really gets
me to this very day, is that I got so into my studies, that I didn't remember to
ask him until much later. Wether or not I learn of this technic in 1 to 5 years from
now; I trully believe this will become a thing of the past eventually, but few may
know, and yes! I hope I am one of those few people. I love the abilities of computers
so much, that I have even considered learning how to hack, but I am into art/webpages
and so many artistical stuff to do with the web to know something to even be capable
to harm others. To answer about formatting a FLOPPY higher in capacity than it is
known to handle so far as we all know; I would love to be able to do this, and am
still looking right know.

You've probably found a respose somewhere else by now, but just in case, I thought
I would provide you with a better response than the last one someone else left.
Physically, the DMF format is similar to the 1.68Mb The major difference is that
the 1.68Mb has 224 entries in the / directory, and a cluster size of 512 bytes.
the DMF format has 16 entries in the / directory and comes in two flavors: DMF1024
(for 1024 bytes) or DMF2048 (for 2048 bytes) cluster size.
However, the 1.72Mb has 2 more tracks (82 instead of 1.68Mb's 80) and is NOT compatible
with WinNT's NTFS file system, whereas 1.68Mb and DMF are compatible with NTFS.
More detail is on the WinImage site FAQ:

Hope this Helps.
