Question about 'What to do about error messages during Windows startup'

I have a question about What
to do about error messages during Windows startup:
I have Windows 95, it wouldn't start up because it said a file was missing. I assumed
it was a Windows file and reinstalled Windows 95. Now Windows won't load and I get
messages saying that certain files are damaged and they need to be replaced or Windows
setup needs to be run again, however, it won't let me do anything, as soon as I "hit
a key to continue" my computer shuts down. Any suggestions please?

What did you re-install windows with/from.?? Try this. At a DOS/command prompt (
c:\> ) type: dir:\windows\options\CABS and hit enter. Then type: setup and hit
enter. Windows "should" start to reinstall from the origional version.

I loaded it from a Windows 95 cdrom. Second question, being as once the computer
goes into Windows it is shutting down, how do I access MS-DOS? When you hit F1 and
get the menu that gives you the choice to go into safe mode (which is not working
in Windows) is there also a command in that menu that would bring me the c:\ prompt
to work with? Sorry for so many questions, don't want to do more damage. Thanks

When you get to the boot menu where you can select safe mode, select command prompt
only. If usinf F1 doesn't get you there, try F8.

Dear Steve, I did run the setup through the dos prompt and it installed Windows 95
again. It went into the same error codes. This is what it said:
Please wait, updating configuration files. Windows could not combine VxDs into a
monolithic file before starting. Windows may not start or run properly. If windows
fails to start, run setup again. Press any key to continue. Then it says, device
file in the system ini file is damaged. It may be needed to run windows you may
need to run setup again. The files it lists are c:\windows\system\wmm32\vwin32.vxd,
vcond.vxd, vxdldr.vxd, vpicd.vxd and ntkern.vxd. If you press any key to continue,
computer shuts down. Do you have any suggestions please, or do I need to reformat
and reload everything? This is my friends computer and she said before she got the
initial error regarding missing a file when windows was loading, she had installed
a program that went into error during installation and she just shut the computer
down in the middle of it :(. I suspect that is what corrupted the computer, she
does know the name of the program, but I dont' know how to uninstall in MS Dos seeing
as Windows is inaccessible (safe mode won't work) and I don't even know if I could
uninstall due to the installation being ruined. Thanks in advance for any help.

I, too, am having the following error message:
Windows could not combine VxDs into a monolithic file before starting.
And I am running Windows ME (or, attempting to run). All documentation online refers
to this problem only in Windows 95, and I am at a loss for solutions as my computer
immediately shuts down when I press a key to continue.
I have tried to reinstall windows a few times in Dos, but every time I receive the
same error. Has anyone had any luck in fixing this, and if so, how?
Thanks for any help,
Christina.
