Question about 'How do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes'
Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at 9:37 pm Posted by Dave Harding
(12 messages posted)
I have a question about How
do get the taskbar and desktop back if Explorer crashes:
I have the same problem but I'm not sure if Explorer is involved. There is no start
button, no taskbar and no icons. The wallpaper is visible and so is the mouse cursor
which will move.
Control+Alt+Delete brings up an empty Task list window with 6 buttons, none of which
work except to close the window.
Any help? I need this computer for a seniors' class.

Sound very much like a virus. However you can try this. Boot to safe mode by tapping
F8 when you see "Starting Windows 95" and selecting Safe mode on the selection screen.
If it gets there Click start, run, type: regedit and click ok. click the plus signs
by: Local Machine. ENUM and MF. Under MF will be CHILD 0000 and CHILD0001. delete
them both and restart the machine and tell it normal mode if prompted. It "should"
say: found new device loading software." When it asks to reboot tell it NO and it
will again say "found new device" Keep telling it NO until it is done and in the
desktop

Thanks Steve, I will try that. I should add that safe boot works properly and I get
all icons,taskbar and start button.

If it goes into safe mode you should be ok, the last two things that load/execute
in either mode are rundll and explorer.exe

Steve,
I tried your suggestion of removing Childs 0001 & 0001 with no luck. I also tried
replacing Explorer and then re-installing Windows also with no luck. Bootlog says
that 5 virtual drivers failed to load including vshare, ebios and vpowerd although
they were referenced properly in System.ini. I can try replacing Rundll. My other
problem is that someone in the office misplaced the Win95 CD and I'm having to use
an older version on floppies.

Dave it's normal for the bootlog to list those devices as failed to load as they
are TSR devices ( terminate stay resident ) Run regedit in safe mode and search for
a value called: NoIDE if found delete it. It sounds to me as if there's an IDE
controller problem.

Steve,
I didn't get to work on it today but one further piece of evidence is that if I boot
in SafeMode with Networking the problem occurs. However when I double clicked on
the screen a window came up called "Tasks" with a "Nuts & Bolts" logo on it. It had
a menu line and under files was a Run App line. I clicked on that and typed in "explorer"
in the dialog box and everything (taskbar, icons etc.) appeared on the screen as
it should. It seems that something is stopping Explorer from running. I will try
your NoIDE idea tomorrow.

Dave, it also sounds as if it's hanging up on an uncompleted task in task manager,
like a virus scan or something. Have you recently installed/uninstalled virus software.

Steve,
I finally got it working again. I tried removing the NoIDE in the register and then
found it wouldn't boot even in safe mode. I had to restore my register in DOS. I
was trying to set up Direct connection when it happened so I went to network in the
control panel and removed some of the stuff including file sharing, rebooted and
it worked. I went back and set up print and file sharing again and it didn't boot
again. I have set this up on other machines and had no trouble, so I'm not sure what
is wrong with this one. There are several things in network so there may be some
conflicts there. I'll try removing some that look redundant and see. Anyway, thanks
for your help.
Dave
PS. There is no NoIDE statement in the registry now.

The NoIDE statement prevents the pc from loading the hard disk controllers and will
cause it to hang just before the desktop loads. What direct connection are you refering
to?

Sorry, I was a little sloppy in my description. It is the direct cable connection
between 2 computers using the com or parallel ports to share files or printers.

Aaaaah ok. If you use ethernet cards and workgroup hub ( or crosseover cable ) to
network, the connection/file transfer speed is phenominal. I've tried both.

The seniors' centre where I maintain the computers has a lot of competition for their
limited funds so we can't afford ethernet. That's why we're using a mix of 486s and
slow pentiums and Win95. With seniors that are not too dextrous and have short memories,
it is a bit of a challenge. I had a fellow wipe out the whole Windows folder on one
machine including MsOffice. I haven't been able to figure out how he did it. It wasn't
on purpose. Thanks again.

To bad your not in Jacksonvile Fl. My son works for a pc wholesaler and I can buy
ethernet cards for $8 each all day long. those and a $50 Linksys workgroup hub and
they'd be networked and could all be on line using a little free proxy program on
1 on-line machine. Also you might want to check out a little program called Poledit.
( policy editor ) It's free from the MSFT Windows 95 download site and can be used
on the machines to disable features such as deleting directories etc, etc. Network
admins use it it business networks to keep folks from playing around in workstation
pc's.

Steve - I am having a similar problem, except:
1. ALL Windows startup modes (safe or not) produce the same result - bare desktop,
invalid page fault in Explorer, "tasks" box if I double-click.
2. I believe I caused the problem by deleting a file. I was trying to free up hard
disk space and deleted 3 or 4 .exe files .. I was sure they all had to do with Real
Player (which I do not have nor want), but the problem started right after that.
SO the cause is clearer, but how to fix it is not. I do not know how to get this
file back. I have a Windows 95 CD and am able to select a program to run form the
CD from the "tasks" window .. but running setup.exe does nothing visible.
I have run McAfee VirusScan from an emergency boot disk and there are no viruses.
Thanks,
Ted

Win9x - Recovering data if you lose explorer

Boot to DOS, and load up system.ini
Open up the file, and find the line which says 'Shell=Explorer.exe'. Change this
line to 'Shell=Progman.exe'. This will give you access to windows using the Windows
3.1 style program manager. This is a useful back door if you need to make backups
etc. before you reinstall windows.

Just to be clear, are you talking about Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer and
secondly, what are you searching?
