Use "Letter Assigner" by Vadim Burtyansky. Worked great for me. No registry fiddling.
A google search will reveal several download places.

It changes the names of devices in Windows 95/98/ME etc.
From D to E, for instance.

Aaah, ok. Thanks Can't that be done in device manager using device properties if
it's done in the correct order?

Not always in Win95 anyway. Probably others too.

Letter Assigner gives you a freedom to choose drive letters as you wish. See the
