i think jason is asking "what should I type At The A:\ Promt So THat Windows 95
will start" as stated in the title of his post.
this is what you have to type:
c:/ (press enter) type: cd windows/ (press enter once again) finally
type the following: win and you will be taken into windows =)

I am having the same problem in win 98. What do I type at the a:\ prompt to get
windows to run? Are the instructions the same? I can't get mine to start and my
laptop only allows a floppy or a cd to be run on the computer at one time (not
both) until I can get it up and running.

pending that you are using a non NT OS (such as win95, win98, winME) yes.. to access
windows you must get yourself into the c:/windows/ folder.. then type: win

If the A:\ prompt is appearing then likely the machine was booted from a dos boot
disk. Depending on the configuration of the boot disk windows may or may not load
when you change to the drive (e.g., C:) where it is installed and the directory (e.g.,
\WINDOWS) and type the WIN command.
The boot disk MUST have an MSDOS.SYS file that points to the exact location of the
windows directory. If the msdos.sys file just has one line like ;SYS then it will
not work.
Dodgy stuff - and that's all assuming Windows is actually present on the hard disk!

How long does it take for Win98 to load when you type win.
Its taking a very long time
Also whenever i turn off the computer it goes directly back to the command prompt
Any ideas would be very helpful
Thanks in advance

This is an old thread. I hope someone will reply.
I cannot get my DELL Inspiron 3000 to start windows 95. I have made a win95b floppy
from the desktop at the internet shop. I connect my external BackPack CD-ROM to
the computer, insert the floppy, turn the power on and press the start switch. I
check the setup and the diskette is the boot device. The computer goes through a
couple of screens and the floppy whirs. I then get the message
CD-ROM Device Driver for IDE
Copyright Oak Tech...
Driver Version :V340
Device Name :BANANA
No drives found aborting installation
Device drivers not found: 'BANANA'
No valid CDROM device drivers selected
A:\>
At this point I've tried to follow the instructions in several threads regarding
starting win95, but no success. Maybe I should be starting a new thread?
Aloha
