disk drive...

hello everyone...
i just got this "Dell XPS M200s w/Windows 95" (installed no hard copies) from a co-worker.
naturally there has to be some type of problem...right?
well, everything else seems to be working fine EXCEPT the most important thing...to
me, the disk drive. now, when i put a disk in the drive the little light does blink
repeatedly, but nothing happens on the computer's screen and nothing happens as far
as the disk's information being loaded.
CAN SOMEONE HELP.
this system's hard drive has been partitioned into; "C,D & E " the "F" drive has
the little disk/drive icon but everytime i click on it it says: "F:\is not accessible"
"drive is not ready" just what does this mean? does something have to be connected
somewhere?
"device manager" shows all drives and their drivers are "functioning properly"
is there someone out there who has had this experience b4?
although i would like to have another computer for video editing purposes, if toooo
many of you tell me to just give it back to it's owner (i haven't paid for it yet,
thank God) then fine. but if there is another solution i am willing to hear it.
seeking help and looking forward to responses.
thank you
Ev

I'm assuming the disk drive you're talking about is the CD rom drive. If in fact
there's one installed, go to device manager and remove the entry for CD rom and then
restart the machine.

hello Steve and thank you for your suggestion.
i did as you suggested, unfortunately, it didn't work. again, i put in a disk (and
yes, it is the cd-rom) and the little light flickered as if to indicate that there
is some type of activity going on, but nothing happens on screen...nothing gets loaded.
i really don't know what else to do. any other suggestions?
by the way did i mention previously that this hard-drive was partitioned? would
lack of space have anything to do with it. because the "device manager" recognizes
the drive as a "toshiba " but it's just not loading anything.
your help is appreciated. yours or anyone else who has any suggestions

Go into system properties and see if the machine is operating in MS-DOS compatibility
mode.

i'm not certain what you mean by "MS-DOS" compatibility. can you explain? when
the machine boots-up it does so in DOS before i see the actual Windows95 screen,
it gives me a bunch of information at boot up about the "A" drive being installed,
and also "ATAPI Toshiba ...." which is the cd-rom
i also downloaded MSN-Explorer onto this system. download went well, but everytime
i try to log on, i'll "either" get to the "Welcome" screen b4 the system freezes,
or the computer will just shut-down. any reasons why this may be happening. although
i am not an avid "AOL" fan, this is the only way to get on line through this system.
i'm stumped. continued help from you and others would be greatly appreciated.
thank you for being so patient, i'm still in the computer learning stage.
any responses? please
ev

Right click My computer, click properties, click the Performance tab and see if it
Says "Operating in MS-DOS compatibility mode. ( this has nothing to do with the
screen you see on start up )
