Question about 'Clean up your hard disk'

I am trying to remove unimportant files from my computer to free up some hard drive space. How can you tell if the program is really needed or not? I tried to do this on my older computer and inadvertedly removed files that I needed in order to go on-line....I'd hate to make that same mistake with this one. I need info for all windows platforms Please!!!!
