MSHEARTS.exe on Windows XP
Thursday, February 6, 2003 at 12:34 am Posted by rakesh

Need to know how to get MSHEARTS.exe to run properly on an XP machine, the version
that comes with XP isn't a network version so I copied a version from windows 2000
which fails to connect to other computers and vise versa.
Does anyone know how to get this working or is there a version for XP.

Microsoft Hearts Network XP fix

I fixed this problem by downloading hearts from the following link and copying it
to my windows directory and making a seperate shorcut to msheart.exe called "Original
Hearts." Then when connecting to another computer, click the browse button. Wait
until the computer you wish to connect to comes up and select it. You should be
up and running.

try this

Try manually typing in the computer name of the windows 95 computer. Sometimes it
doesn't connect when I choose 'browse' also but will connect when I type in the name.
For some reason I can never connect to the xp machine with my 98 or 95 machines,
so make sure you have the 95 or 98 machine be the dealer.

I was able to get mshearts.exe to work with my XP and 2K systems .. dloaded the mshearts.exe
from http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBA/tip0100/rh0133.htm and installed to the XP Windows
folder and 2K WINNT folder .. enabled Win 95 compatibility mode for mshearts.exe
on the XP system and had 2K be dealer ... used browse to make the connection and
used computer names not user IDs ..

1.Network DDE
2.Network DDE DSDM
*from my exprience the 2 services I mention is disable when I upgraded my xp to sp2

Any other ideas?

I also tried running a LAN game of hearts. I am trying it between two XP machines.
So I downloaded the old hearts version from the previously posted link, did all
the other fixes and tweaks, plus I used computer names instead of user IDs. I receive
the error message "Unable to connect with dealer. Hearts will end."
Any other suggestions?

Microsoft Hearts Network - XP & 98se

I have tried copying the older harts executable to c:\windows with unsuccessful results
on XP. I get the 'The Microsoft Hearts Network' dialog box, but the 'How do you
want to play?' area is grey. If anyone has 98/XP running, please give step by step
directions with full path names.

Did you ever get MSHearts to play between your 2 XP computers. If so, I am also trying
to do this and haven't figured it out. Can you drop me a line as to how you did it.
Thanks,
R

I am trying to play Hearts in a lan with Windows Xp computers. I will install the
NetBeui protocol under Windows XP, following the instructions on microsoft article
301401.
I hope that it will work, because MSHearts uses Netbeui protocol to comunicate with
other players.
In case of success, I will be here to say everything.
Thanks,
Anibal

I've tried a few times to get this to work. How about we all contact Microsoft and
just ask them to update this classic game?!!! It's better than any of the duded
up ones. Talk about annoyances.....MS itself is on top because of stuff like this.

The solutions listed above to play MS Hearts on an XP LAN WILL work at least as long
as one W2k (or W98/95) box is in the mix.
(1) Download MSHEARTS zip file and extract the it to the XP Windows folder and W2k
WINNT folder.
(2) On any XP boxes set Win 95 Compatibility Mode for the MSHEARTS.exe file
(3) On any XP boxes run services.msc and set Network DDE and Network DDE DSDM to
Manual start (XP SP2 disables these services which are REQUIRED for 16-bit LAN MSHEARTs.)
(4) Create a convenient shortcut to the MSHEARTS.exe for any XP or W2k boxes from
the desktop or start menu
(5) Before attempting to play, run services.msc on all XP and W2k boxes and Start
the Network DDE service (Network DDE DSDM will also be automatically started).
(6) Use a W2k (or W98/95) box as server - i.e. start it first and select "I want
to be dealer" - the game should be waiting for other players to join.
(7) The other players should select "join another game" and browse for the dealer
- note that the dealer is selected by the COMPUTER name NOT the player's .
(8) Once the other players have joined their player names should be displayed on
the board and the dealer must press F2 to start the play.
Only two real bugs: there must be at least one W2k or W98/95 box in the mix to be
server and the animation was timed for SLOWER W3.1 systems and is way too fast.
Also since XP SP2 turned off Network DDE services as a security measure, its probably
a good idea to disable it and Network DDE DSDM after play if you are on a highspeed
always on connection to the internet.

I followed all the instructions for the 2 posts that called for the starting of NetDDE
and it's companion NetDDEdsdm and just as I was about to complain, there it worked!
I changed my startup type to Automatic on both just before it worked as on manual
it erred out. It is possible it just takes more than a few seconds to actually work.
Just as mentioned above, the Win95/98 machine must be the dealer. Even with logon
credentials I could not get it to work in reverse. Hey!, I'm happy! Thanks!
